Why Accounting Exists

Human beings exchange skills to meet social, religious, and economic needs. Over time, the barter system (product exchanged against product) gave way to the monetary economy (money as medium of exchange). Both types of transactions require recording — and this need led to the birth of accounting.

ExampleFarmer exchanges grain for clothShopkeeper sells goods for ₹, then uses ₹ to buy

Historical origin:Indian historians credit Chanakya's economics with describing the existence and significance of accounting. Western historians credit Luca Pacioli of Italy (mathematician). The industrial revolution and expansion of trade increased accounting's significance.
