Accounting as Language and Science/Art
Language of Business: Accounting provides information of business transactions → functions like language. Language has predetermined norms → accounting has predetermined rules. Language is flexible → time-based changes incorporated in accounting too.
As a Science
- Based on universally accepted rules and principles
- Same process followed by all accountants
- Same results when same data is used
- Rules are fixed and standardized
As an Art
- Requires specific skill to prepare accounts
- Different presentation styles possible
- Three categories: Financial, Cost, Management Accounting
- Presentation in different manner without changing nature = art
| Aspect | As a Science | As an Art |

| Process | Same process followed by all accountants | Different presentation styles possible |
| Results | Same results when same data used | Results may be presented differently |
| Categories | Financial, Cost, Management Accounting | Presentation of information in varied formats |
| Flexibility | Rules are fixed and standardized | Requires adaptability to context |
Key Takeaways
Key Takeaways
- 6 limitations: non-financial transactions ignored, stable money value assumed, historical focus, market value avoided, use of estimates, and dual standards.
- The most exam-relevant limitations are stable money value and use of estimates — both can be asked as short-answer questions.
- Accounting is both a science (fixed rules) and an art (creative presentation) — the three categories are Financial, Cost, and Management Accounting.
- Despite limitations, accounting remains the most reliable system for financial communication.
