Meaning and Formula of BOT
Exports are entered as credit (positive) items in the BOP account, while imports are entered as debit (negative) items. BOT is just a part of BOP account and plays a crucial role in deciding the overall situation of BOP of a country.

Surplus BOT
When a country exports more goods than it imports — the balance is positive.
Status: Favourable
Indicator: Exports > Imports → positive balance
Deficit BOT
When a country imports more goods than it exports — the balance is negative.
Status: Unfavourable
Indicator: Imports > Exports → negative balance

Surplus: India's IT Exports
India exports ₹5 lakh crore worth of IT services annually but imports only ₹2 lakh crore worth of foreign software. Trade surplus = ₹3 lakh crore — favourable BOT.
Deficit: India's Oil Imports
India imports ₹8 lakh crore worth of crude oil but exports only ₹1 lakh crore in refined petroleum. Trade deficit = ₹7 lakh crore — unfavourable BOT on oil alone.
